Here are a couple of interesting statistics surrounding air quality. According to the EPA, we spend 90% of our time indoors. And yet, our indoor environment is two to five times more toxic that the outdoors. (Of course, these statistics don’t generally apply to us Hawai’i residents.)
A big part of this is indoor air quality. And with the approach of springtime and the increase in airborne allergens, this becomes an even greater deal.
The good news is that essential oils can be a huge help in improving indoor air quality. Here are just a few of the ways essential oils can help:
- Removing unpleasant odors. Essential oils can eliminate unpleasant odors in the home, whether these smells come from your bathroom, your pantry, or your kitchen. And when you consider the intense emotional effect aromas and odors have on our health, this is no small feat.
- Stopping the spread of fungus and molds. Indoor environments are the perfect breeding grounds for fungus, molds, and spores. These organisms can lead to allergies, infections, and a range of other health problems. Fortunately, many essential oils do a fantastic job of helping you get rid of fungus and molds in your home.
- Stopping the spread of harmful bacteria. Airborne bacteria can cause many serious health issues, from respiratory diseases to skin problems. Essential oils have potent antibacterial properties and can stop these harmful bacteria from spreading.
- Replacing dangerous synthetic air fresheners. Synthetic air fresheners slowly emit harmful chemicals that can have unpredictable negative effects on your health. Essential oils are a natural and safe alternative — and they even smell much better than the synthetic stuff!
So which oils can you use to improve indoor air quality?
All essential oils have beautiful aromas, and many of them have potent antibacterial and antifungal properties. Here’s just a short list to help you get started:
- Tea tree essential oil
- Oregano essential oil
- Patchouli essential oil
- Peppermint essential oil
- Lavender essential oil
- Rosemary essential oil
- Basil essential oil
- Manuka essential oil
- Eucalyptus essential oil
And how can you use these oils to improve indoor air quality?
The easiest and most direct way is to use them in your home diffuser. Simply add 3-5 drops of different essential oils to your diffuser and diffuse for 30-60 minutes at a time (diffusers with programmable settings are perfect for this).
